Joe Stump

Joe StumpJoe Stump has been scaling large websites for over ten years and is an expert on geo-location services, web trends and technology management.

After spending a few years as lead architect for Digg, Joe struck out on his own, together with Matt Galligan. to found SimpleGeo. SimpleGeo offers ready-to-use location infrastructure. Currently, Joe is the CTO of SimpleGeo and responsible for architecting and scaling a robust GIS infrastructure for developers around the world.

“As the production of data increases, its inherent value decreases. Content is no longer king, context is king.”

Before SimpleGeo, Joe started CrashCorp, a company that builds location based games. During the process, he found out that building a location based infrastructure from scratch is challenging as it needs to be ultra-fast, and ultra-scaleable.

Also, existing products can now be used for a large variety of services (for example Paypal if you need a shopping cart, Facebook for social features and Amazon for scaleable hosting services), but a hosted geospatial platform for apps didn’t exist yet.

Both developments lead to the creation of SimpleGeo, SimpleGeo now offers a combination of scaleable cloud-based storage for geo-data, a marketplace for geo-data and advanced statistics.

Joe graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a BA in Computer Information Systems and is an expert in the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) stack.

He has authored pieces for O’Reilly’s ONLAMP.com and has spoken at Web 2.0 Expo, FOWA, FOWD, Q-Con, SXSW, MySQL Conference, PHP-Con and The Next Web Conference (to name a few).

Joe speaks about Technology Trends, Technology Management and GeoLocation Services.
